MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello
Toastmasters!
This is an exciting time of year. In my case, college starts again for my daughter and all of her friends. While getting her ready, I was thinking
about how much Toastmasters helps us learn and improve. Every meeting is a learning experience. All of our members have interesting
points to make and
information to give. In our last meeting we learned and had reinforced in our consciousness the importance of being on
time, both personally and professionally. That message has really helped me this week. And David gave us a self motivating message that we
all might have paid $300.00 for at a "Self-Motivational" Seminar.
We
all learn, motivate and encourage each other. That is what Toastmasters is about. And we don't charge $300.00 an
hour what a
savings! In my case, without even noticing it, I became more confident in my work because of Toastmasters.
Our old friend 'Ferris Bueller' might say that another nice thing about being in Toastmasters is that, unlike high school or college, we can talk
about any subject and have any opinion, with out it going on our infamous "Permanent Record".
Yes there are people who are afraid of public speaking and who feel getting up and giving a speech is a "RISK". There is an old saying that
goes something like this:
"People who take risks don't live forever. Who does? But one thing is for sure, people who don't take risks, don't live at all."
Have a good week, and Speak UP!

Doldrums and Diligence Doth We Discuss
The Warner Center Toastmasters mid August meeting sailed into uncharted territory with a Table Topics Expedition into the Doldrums, figuratively and literally. The sparse attendance, well below our usual, was evidence of the aptness of the meeting theme; namely the aforesaid Doldrums.Humcor
is glad to report that most members that rose to express themselves on the
subject rejected the Doldrums as a place, a way of life and an influence on
their outlook on life.
Bob
Steward took the Table Topics ribbon for
his heart stopping memoire of being becalmed in the Salton Sea,
although
there is some skepticism in the minds of members present as to whether a word of
it was true. But that's how it is
in the Doldrums. Anything can happen and nobody cares.
David
D4 took the Ribbon for Best Speech with another masterful presentation on the
building blocks of character; this time examining the meaning of personal
responsibility as reflected in the language we use to talk about our personal
responsibility for personal responsibility; only he said it better.
Claudia
Hanrahan and Diana Shulman both deserve special mention for outstanding
speeches. Claudia's 2nd speech was on punctuality. She's all for it, having
never been late for anything ever since the day she was born. I believe she may
have been early that day too. If
only my teen age sons could have been there.
Diana told a lovely and engrossing tale of of a ring of eleven year old
car thieves led by her somewhat older cousin. She had us on the edge of our
chairs, but unfortunately
she kept us there a few seconds too long and was declared ineligible for the
competition by our implacable timer, Bob Steward, he of Salton Sea fame.
Perhaps justice prevailed at last in response to her confession
of those long ago crimes.
Loan
Carrison won Best Evaluator Ribbon for her animated and insightful critique of D's
speech.
Let's
hope we've now passed out of the summer doldrums and entered a
more active autumn. But Humcor won't be there on the 28th to find out. He
is on vacation.
Have
a great meeting everyone!
