Samurai Send-up Hires Ninja Sound Team

In the finest tradition of Akira Kurosawa, imagine a Japanese warrior with an Irish accent, a "samurai master" housefly that teaches lessons in swordsmanship, and "the most beautiful geisha of our time", the object of a heroic rescue who turns out to be a not-so-ravishing guy in geisha drag. The villain who kidnaps the 6 foot geisha "Tempura" is the sword wielding samurai "Konica". His cohorts, the overweight ninja "Sega" and toga-clad "Atari" parcel out slapstick martial arts moves. And the bumbling hero, "Hitachi", is always tripping over his clogs.

Director-Producer Mohammed Koaik, a student at New York Film Academy at Universal Studios, has produced "Hitachi Tempura", a send-up of Japanese Samurai movies. Carelessly ADR'ed in English, and shot at Descanso Gardens' teahouse in San Gabriel, none of the original actors' voices were used for the parts – everything is dubbed with deliberate malice of technique.

Command Post mixed Koaik's hi-def short in Dolby Stereo using our new 1080 LT-46148 video monitor. The post sound involved ADR, foley, music editing, and surround panning. A tight delivery deadline combined with Mohammed's creative instincts made for a really fun, fast, and low-cost mix all the way around. We used our sound effects database to create a rich and multi-layered Asian ambience for the water-drenched greenery of Descanso's Japanese Garden.

"The pleasure was mine to work with your very professional staff," remarked Koaik. "We will work again in the near future."

John Meets with Diamond Game Staff in Las Vegas

This year, Command Post has produced sound packages for nearly a dozen casino games made by Diamond Game, including Hot n Saucy, Lotto Fruit, Irish Gold, Smokehouse, and So Wild. Sound Supervisor John Graves recently traveled to Las Vegas to meet again with the Diamond Game production team, including game designer Gary Harris, and to attend the enormous IGE show, where other gaming manufacturers and casino and resort suppliers show the best of their offerings.

The emphasis this year at Command Post has been on music as an adjunct to game sound. Among the challenges for Command Post are to create sounds that maintain interest and are not too repetitive, yet can stand out and be recognized in the noisy casino environment. For Irish Gold, Command Post used percussion tracks, flutes, guitars, harps, and voice artist David Koenigsberg as the leprechaun, to invoke an Irish audio track that blends both tradition and technology in a lively and effervescent mix.

Each game has it's own sound identity: short 3-5 second symbol sounds that are as iconic as they are memorable; reel spins and payoff sounds that reward the player, and a bonus spin "song" which encapsulates each game's identity in an instrumental cue.

For the premium game "So Wild", Command Post patched in vocal-driven vocoder harmonies using the Eventide H3000 processor and the Motif ES8 keyboard.

NEWSFLASH 09

Alex Morrisen's "Portrait of an Addict" opened at Cannes, and "Nobody's Shalom" was the opening selection at the Beverly Hills Film Festival this year. Both short films were mixed at Command Post.

Command Post has just acquired the extremely rare AIEB2 from Japan, the expansion board for the Motif keyboard. Now instead of 4 audio outputs, the AIEB2 provides a total of 12 outputs.

Command Post buys 16 channel Behringer line mixer to expand mix options to 56 inputs.

Command Post installs 1920x1080 46 inch Mitsubishi monitor which not only serves as a video monitor but also as a third computer monitor for our graphics computer, the XW8000.

Audio Restoration on the Reservation

Tim Ramos' ambitious feature, California Indian, has just completed an extensive Dolby Stereo mix and sound design at Command Post. Produced by "Against The Wind", and financially backed by The Big Valley Rancheria and other tribes, the film describes an Indian community's tricky negotiations with an investor to open a casino on their reservation. Filmed mostly in the northern part of the state, California Indian features the inside story of  American Indian life and features some heavies in the Indian community,  including activist and American Indian leader Dennis Banks. The cast includes Ramos, Julia Jones, Gil Birmingham, Gary Farmer, and Mark Boone.

Due to sound issues at the various locations, the amount of ADR was substantial, requiring several days of talent recording in the comfortable environs of Command Post. Precise footsteps and hard effects were created through a combination of live and electronic foley. "Our sophisticated denoising package also played a major role", says engineer Gene Graves.

Among the problems when shooting in a public building were a distant, beeping smoke detector.  Rather than ADR the section, a targeted notch filter from among the dozens of Wavearts filters solved the problem. Our Waves audio restoration package also played a key role in reducing background noise in some scenes.

After a one week mix, Tim's expectations had been "fully filled".  "It was great working with you," said Tim. "Awesome work!"
